  2. Confessions were later found to have been obtained after ill-treatment during interrogation.
  3. Forensic evidence relied upon at trial was later shown to be unreliable.
  4. The Court of Appeal found the convictions unsafe and unsatisfactory and quashed them after the men had served nearly 17 years.

The case directly led to the creation of the Royal Commission on Criminal Justice in 1991 and, from it, the Criminal Cases Review Commission, the standing body that now reviews all suspected UK miscarriages of justice.
