Revive traditional johads with village labour

Premise

  • Traditional water conservation, such as johads and check dams, had been abandoned for bore wells that simply sucked the groundwater up.

Moves

  1. Went to the interior of Rajasthan, and set up a small practice in a village while colleagues promoted education.
  2. Walked through the villages to educate people to rebuild old check dams.
  3. Had villagers build johads themselves through voluntary labour, with volunteers helping.
  4. Helped villagers take charge of water management using johads, rainwater tanks and check dams.
