Strategic Insights

Strategic Lens

Why have India's imports of electronics from Taiwan grown about twelve-fold since 2019?

What happened. India's imports of electrical and electronic equipment from Taiwan rose from about USD 0.74 billion in 2019 to about USD 9.1 billion in 2025.

  1. Taiwan's main exports to India are integrated circuits, machinery and electronic products.
  2. More than 80 Taiwanese firms, including Foxconn, MediaTek, Delta and Gigabyte, have a presence in India.
  3. India's own electronics exports to the United States rose from about USD 2.2 billion in 2019 to about USD 25.8 billion in 2025.
  4. Both figures grew by more than eleven times in the same period.

Understanding. From our lens, India's growing electronics assembly is drawing in Taiwanese components and firms. The data cannot prove that one causes the other, but the two move together, which suggests India is deepening its place in the electronics chain rather than only buying finished goods.

Benefits

  • IndiaAccess to components and manufacturing know-how that India does not yet make at scale. (our reading)

Constraints

  • IndiaDependence on a single supplier without official relations, in a field where supply can be disrupted. (our reading)
